Volunteer dental professionals offer this care by appointment. Restorative and preventive services are provided in a dental clinic for Portland’s homeless population.

This program provides a full range of outpatient dental services for clients who are currently receiving case work services through the Maine Department of Health & Human Services (through the former Department of Behavioral and Developmental Services). This program treats only adults who are mentally retarded or have a chronic mental illness. These services are available on a sliding fee scale basis. Intravenous (IV) sedation services are available.

Hours of operation are Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM; Hygiene: Monday-Friday (hours vary); IV Sedation: Thursdays, 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM.

This program recruits dentists from the Greater Portland area to make free dentures for pre-qualified residents of Cumberland County. To qualify, people must verify that they are at 125% of poverty level or below and have had a dental evaluation. The candidates are financially responsible for the dental exam and any necessary extractions. The patient is also responsible for scheduling and complying with all the appointments.

This program offers dental hygiene services that include oral examination, personalized oral hygiene instruction, blood pressure screening, radiographic survey (x-rays), teeth cleaning, fluoride treatments and sealant placement. These services are available to the general public and there are no income restrictions. This is a teaching clinic so appointments may require more time. Patients do not see a dentist, but work with a student hygienist. Services NOT provided include: fillings and restorations, extractions, crowns, root canals, orthodontics, dentures or bridges.

Hours of operation are 8:30 AM -4:30 PM. The clinic is only open from September through April.

This programs provides quality pediatric and adolescent dental care for ages 1 though 20 years. Services include acute dental care and preventive hygiene services, comprehensive assessments for oral diseases and conditions, individualized preventive dental health programs based upon caries-risk assessments and periodontal disease risk assessments. Referral services include oral surgeons, pediatric hospital-based oral restorative programs and orthodontists.Oral health education is provided to all patients.

This program is a non-profit oral public health agency providing mobile and stationary dental and hygiene services to low-income children and adolescents in Head Start and Childcare programs, WIC programs and public schools throughout the State of Maine with The EarlySmiles and MaineSmiles school-based dental programs.Oral health programming is individually tailored to meet the needs of the different agencies, programs and schools served by the mobile dental programs. The programs range from hygiene services to full dental programs with traveling dentists, X-rays and restorative capabilities.

This program provides exams, cleanings, sealants, simple fillings, extractions, and acrylic partials to both adults and children, whose family earnings are at or below federal poverty guidelines. Only residents of Knox County and those towns immediately next to Knox County are eligible for the dental program. Priority is given to those who need dental care for pain and infection control, to improve employability, and to children who have been unable to receive dental care.

Appointments are set up by the program's staff, who will schedule patients into participating dental offices. There is a sliding fee scale for clinic services. The clinic offers dentures to those who qualify for them. Some of the qualifications for dentures are pain control, employment and self-esteem. For those who do not qualify for dentures through this program, the program's staff will work with patients to find other resources. Volunteer dentists and hygienists staff the dental offices, generously donating their time and expertise.

Financial assistance is available; services are available on a sliding fee scale based upon income levels and household size. Emergency exams and services are generally available for patients with pain, swelling, or infection.

The program employs a pediatric dentist, two general dentists, two hygienists, three dental assistants and office staff on a full-time and part time basis. Oral health education is offered to all patients. A sliding fee scale is available for patients whose family incomes meet the program ’s guidelines (based on federal income levels).

This program provides high quality care to all community members, including low income, uninsured and under-insured community members who may not otherwise have our services available to them.
